cookies left out to cool

Coming back from college, a queer undergrad attempts to come out to his Catholic grandmother after hiding his authentic self for years while baking cookies like they used to.

Cookies Left Out to Cool is an exploration of my own childhood and relationship with my grandmother, and the decision to finally come to terms with my authentic self, stripping away the fear and pain of hiding. The film seeks to capture the juxtaposition of the warmth, the love, and connection between grandson and grandmother, and the deep-seeded fear of rejection, dismissal, and lack of acceptance at stake when coming out as gay.

When I was processing my sexuality, I was terrified to reveal myself to my grandparents in fear of their reaction. Having grown up in a religious household, being gay wasn’t accepted or discussed openly. The way my coming out to my grandparents happened is something that I wish had gone differently. I am making this film because I feel the deep desire to explore my relationship with my grandma post-coming out, seeing how this story could have played out.
